Christmas Ornament 2016

Every year since the museum opened, we have chosen to create a commemorative ornament. Each of the ornaments, except for one year, have been of great or historic buildings in Frankfort that have been lost and no longer exist.

Green Mill Service Station and Restaurant

The Green Mill Service Station and Restaurant, an eye-catching example of early 20th century roadside novelty architecture, was located at 110 Versailles Pike, where U. S. 60, 421, and 460 merged into Frankfort. This area today is commonly called “Spaghetti Junction.” When Emmett and Annette Mills opened the restaurant/service station in the mid-1930s they had no idea how popular the place would become with the early automobile drivers. It was the perfect location to garner traffic from Lexington, Georgetown, Louisville, and of course, Frankfort. No driver could miss the huge green mill at the edge of the heavily travelled intersection. Not only did customers find the necessities for maintaining their motor vehicles, but they also found curb-service food, soft drinks, and beer. Now those days are gone. Both Emmett and Annette are at peace in section T of the Frankfort Cemetery. The Green Mill was razed in 1958.
