The Wilkinson Society

Of The Capital City Museum

The Wilkinson Society, named after Frankfort’s founder, James Wilkinson, began in 2006 as a way to support the Capital City Museum’s work in preserving and telling the story of Frankfort and Franklin County. The Society is an annual giving program whose membership benefits include a free Frankfort Christmas ornament, discounts on books published by the Frankfort Heritage Press, a regularly published newsletter, and invitations to special events once the Museum reopens safely. As friends of the museum, your ongoing financial support is greatly appreciated.

Please consider joining or renewing your membership at one of the following levels:

75 - John Fallis

Join the John Fallis Gang at the $25 level. When Fallis was shot dead in 1929, the Courier-Journal referred to the legendary man as “a gambler, gunman, bootlegger, ruler, and terrorist of the Craw, Frankfort’s underworld.”

Sweeten the deal with Rebecca-Ruth at the $50 level. Rebecca Gooch and Ruth Hanley Booe started their candy business at the bar of the Frankfort Hotel. In 1929 Gooch sold her half of the business to Booe, who is credited with inventing the “Bourbon Ball,” a world famous confection.

Booe

Spend some green with John Bibb at the $75 level. When Wapping Street’s John Bibb was in his 80s he began handing out samples of his lettuce. Unfortunately he didn’t live long enough to realize that his lettuce would be grown in nearly every state and in many countries, a delicious delicacy in salads.

Lutkemeier, Joseph

Get down to business with the Lutkemeier family at the $100 level. For more than 100 years the Lutkemeier family operated a general store on the corner of Broadway and Lewis Street.

Free up some cash with Emily Tubman at the $250 level. Emily Thomas of Frankfort married a Georgia plantation owner, Richard Tubman, who died in 1836 leaving her his huge estate and a substantial inheritance. She provided for the enslaved people she inherited, sending some to Africa. She used her money to develop the Midway Orphan School, Millersburg College, and Kentucky University. She also gave over $26,000 to restore Frankfort’s First Christian Church following an 1870 fire.

Col E H Taylor

Pour it on with Col. E. H. Taylor at the $500 level. He proved to be a genius in the merchandising, financing and promotion of bourbon whiskey. He established several modern distillery complexes: Old Taylor at Millville, Carlisle and O.F.C. at Leestown, and Hermitage in South Frankfort. He also served as Frankfort’s mayor and served several terms in the legislature.

Judge our cause worthy with John Marshall Harlan at the $750 level. A Frankfort attorney and an officer during the Civil War, he was appointed a justice to the U. S. Supreme Court in 1877. He was known as the Great Dissenter, especially in the field of civil rights for African American citizens.

49- Chief Justice John Marshall
John J Crittenden

Don’t compromise with John J. Crittenden at the $1000 level. While he was a governor of Kentucky, five times a U. S. Senator, and twice Attorney General of the U. S., he is most famous for this “Crittenden Compromise.” It included six proposals designed to preserve the Union and avoid a civil war. The compromise was defeated 25-23.
